Since teams are starting to drop pending FAs, I thought it would be a good time to remind everyone about the Qualifying Offer.
Per the rules:
Teams may opt to offer either MLB-FA or ARB-FA players a qualifying offer. By making this offer, the player will be released to the free agency pool. However, the original team will automatically place a one year bid on this player at the start of free agency. The amount will be equal to the average of the top three salaries at their primary position the prior season. If the team eventually loses this player during the auction, they will be entitled to draft pick compensation. The QO auction will count as the team's open auction, and they will not be allowed to submit another player for auction until their QO players auction has completed. In the case of multiple QOs for a single team, they will be auctioned one after the other, in order of highest offer to lowest, ties broken alphabetically
This year, the QOs by position are: C: $36.75 1B: $55 2B: $33.75 3B: $48.75 SS: $60 LF: $59.5 CF: $61.25 RF: $68.25 SP: $54.25 RP: $28.25
For example, if I decided to place a QO on JP Crawford, at the start of FA, i would automatically open an auction for him, with the initial bid of 1 year, $60 AAV ($60 BV). Any bid with a BV higher than that (for example, 5 years, $15 AAV, $61.5 BV) can beat the qualifying offer.
If a team loses a player after offering a QO, they will receive a compensatory pick between the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the FYPD. There is no penalty for teams who sign these players.
